Fall is around the corner and with it
comes the urge to curl up in a chair with a
good book in front of the fire. The fireplace is
the heart of many homes and makes a room
an inviting cozy space to relax and unwind.
Fireplaces are also making their way outside,
with one of the trends to watch this year
being the outside-inside fireplace; not to
mention, they’re becoming a centerpiece in
many rooms besides the living room. When
it comes to fireplace trends there is not
only a wide range of accessories to suit your
style, but also heating
options to suit your
budget.
Breaking down walls
Fireplaces have broken
out of their role
as strictly family room
showpieces. Fireplaces
are now in every part
of the home from bedrooms
to bathrooms.
Having a fireplace in
a bathroom gives the
room a spa-like feel.
They’re also making a comeback in kitchens
– the traditional spot for fireplaces – where
thy give any kitchen an old-world, rustic
touch.
Fireplaces are also breaking down walls.
The hottest design trend is see-through
fireplaces, meaning they can be enjoyed from
two rooms. These double-sided fireplaces
can be easily accommodated in some homes,
where a dividing wall between a living room
and dining room, for example, can be broken
through to bring warmth to two rooms
instead of one.
Bringing the inside out
One of the trends-to-watch at the International
Builders’ Show in Las Vegas this year
was the indoor-outdoor fireplace as showcased
by the company Heat & Glo. The seethrough
gas fireplace can bring warmth to
your deck amongst the potted plants as well
as in your living room.
There are also other options for outdoor
fireplaces. These are more than just fire pits
and chimeneas. Outdoor fireplaces complete
the concept of having a true outdoor living
room. They showcase a complete fireplace
with chimney and hearth. They can also
extend the use of your patio well into the
fall. They help define an outdoor living space
and draw the eye up to focus on your beautiful
trees. These fireplaces are typically
wood-burning featuring brick and stone to
make them weatherproof and have a more
natural feel.
Colours and trends
Needless to say some of these major renovations
or add-ons can be a bit pricey, but
there are also simple things you can do to
update your fireplace. Colour schemes tend
towards more neutral colours such as whites,
grays and beiges. Depending on your home’s
style, fireplaces can go from country-chic to
ultra-modern. A simple way to update a fireplace
is by painting the mantle. Dark wood
mantles now look dated, and painting them
white is a quick way to bring any fireplace
back to the year 2013.
